Equinor and its partners announced an oil discovery at the Othello South prospect in the Norwegian Sea. This wildcat well, 6507/8-12 S, is the first to be drilled in production license 124 B. Discovery
Location is 4 kilometers north of the Heidrun field and approximately 240 kilometers west of Sandnessjøen. Size Estimates Preliminary figures indicate between 0.95 and 12.6 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent (0.15–2 million Sm³).
Geology: The well encountered a 14-meter oil column in the upper Åre Formation (Early Jurassic) within sandstone of good to very good quality. Deeper oil-bearing sand with poor to moderate quality was also found, representing potential upside.
Drilled by the COSL Innovator rig to a vertical depth of 2,477 meters below sea level in water 374 meters deep. The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.
Partnership and Next Steps
Equinor operates the license with a 25.69% interest, alongside partners Petoro (36.39%), ConocoPhillips Skandinavia (27.91%), and Vår Energi (10%). The licensees plan to assess the discovery for potential development as a tie-back to the northern part of the Heidrun field infrastructure.
The COSL Innovator rig is moving to drill well 6610/7-U-3 in production license 1014 to test for shallow gas.
