Shell was awarded the Rahamat block in Egypt’s offshore Nile Delta Basin. This award followed an international bidding round that concluded in July 2025 and featured 13 blocks.
Key details of the Rahamat block and field include:
Location & Size: The block covers approximately 301 sq km in the offshore Nile Delta, with water depths ranging from 50 to 70 metres.
Discovery History: The Rahamat field was originally discovered in 2009 by BP. BP later relinquished the concession after failing to meet development deadlines.
Estimated Reserves: The field is estimated to contain 1.3 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas and 80 million barrels of condensate.
Strategic Context: This award is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to reverse declining gas output and restore its status as a net exporter by 2027. Shell’s proximity to other assets, such as its partnership with Petronas in nearby fields, is expected to facilitate faster development.
