The Sabratha Compression Project is a major offshore gas infrastructure development in Libya jointly executed by Italian energy group Eni and Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) through their Mellitah Oil & Gas joint venture. Officially launching hydrocarbon production on 29 June 2026, the project focuses on expanding the capability of the offshore Sabratha platform to offset natural production decline and extend the lifespan of the Bahr Essalam gas field.
The platform sits roughly 100 kilometres offshore Libya in the Mediterranean Sea.A massive new 1,600-tonne compression module packed with advanced compression trains was installed directly onto the existing offshore platform.The newly upgraded facilities boast a processing capacity of roughly 440 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd).The upgraded machinery lets the facility extract gas even under low-pressure reservoir conditions, fully maximizing overall fuel .The upgrades are engineered to yield an extra 800 million cubic metres of gas per year, along with supplementary associated condensates.A major percentage of the recovered gas is directly funneled into sustaining Libya’s national grid and ensuring stable domestic electricity generation.The remaining surplus gas is exported directly to Italy using the trans-Mediterranean GreenStream pipeline, strengthening regional European energy security.The Sabratha compression upgrade is part of a broader $10 billion multi-project initiative currently being executed by Eni and NOC in Libya. This larger strategic roadmap includes ongoing work on the Bouri Gas Utilization Project and the Structures A&E offshore field developments.
