Zimbabwe is opening its energy sector to independent power producers (IPPs) and private investors, with a growing focus on upstream oil and gas exploration to complement its power reforms.
The government aims to attract up to $9 billion in new energy investments, part of which will support the development of domestic hydrocarbon resources. Key among these is Invictus Energy’s Cabora Bassa project, where natural gas discoveries could eventually supply future gas-to-power and downstream initiatives.
Although Zimbabwe currently relies heavily on coal and hydropower, new oil and gas exploration efforts are seen as critical to diversifying the national energy mix, reducing imports, and achieving energy self-sufficiency by 2030.
