Eni has officially started operations for Phase 2 of its Congo LNG project ahead of schedule. This expansion will increase the project’s total capacity to 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
Project Name: Congo LNG project.
Offshore the Republic of the Congo, within the Marine XII license area, sourcing gas from the Nené and Litchendjili fields.
Key Infrastructure for Phase 2: The project involves the new Nguya floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit and the Scarabeo 5 unit (a converted drilling rig) for gas treatment and compression.
Phase 2 adds 2.4 MTPA of liquefaction capacity, bringing the total project capacity (including the operational Phase 1 Tango FLNG unit) to 3 MTPA.
Operations for Phase 2 began just 35 months after the construction of the Nguya FLNG started, a new benchmark for execution speed in the industry. The first LNG cargo from this phase is expected to be exported in early 2026.
The project is central to Eni’s strategy in the Congo, which has operated in the country for over 55 years. Eni already supplies gas to the power plant that generates about 70% of the nation’s electricity.
The Congo LNG project is significant for diversifying Europe’s energy supplies and establishing the Republic of the Congo as a key African LNG exporter.
