Equinor officially started production at its new Eirin subsea gas field in the North Sea on May 5, 2026.The subsea tie-back project connects the Eirin field directly to existing infrastructure to rapidly boost natural gas supplies to Europe and extend the production lifespan of the nearby Gina Krog platform from 2029 to 2036.
Estimated at NOK 4.5 billion (approximately €414 million).
Ownership Interests are whete Equinor holds a 58.7% operating interest alongside partner ORLEN Upstream Norway AS with 41.3%.
Infrastructure are Developed as a subsea template (two slots) tied back to the Gina Krog platform via a 9.5 km flowline.
Gina Krog’s electrification in 2023 reduces Eirin’s production footprint to about 3 kg of (CO_{2}) per barrel of oil equivalent.Gas travels to the Gina Krog platform, onwards to Sleipner A for processing, and then exports to Europe via the Gassled network.
Recent Ongoing Subsea Gas Developments by EquinorBeyond the immediate launch of the Eirin field,
Equinor has launched further subsea projects on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) to sustain energy exports as the Atlantis Project (FEED Awarded): On May 5, 2026, Aker Solutions secured the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract for the Atlantis gas and condensate discovery.
Located 35 km southeast of the Gullfaks field, this subsea tie-back project will rely on pressure depletion using existing infrastructure.Fram Sør Project: In late 2025, Equinor ordered the first large-scale all-electric subsea production system from SLB OneSubsea for this North Sea tie-back project. It will tie into the Troll C platform to export gas to the Kollsnes processing plant.
