Production has started in the Bacalhau field in the Santos Basin, a major offshore project operated by Equinor alongside partners ExxonMobil Brasil, Petrogal Brasil (a joint venture between Galp and Sinopec), and Pré-sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA).
The project, which is Equinor’s largest international development, began production on October 15, 2025. Location:
The Bacalhau field is situated in the Santos Basin’s pre-salt region, offshore Brazil.
The development is a partnership between Equinor (the operator), ExxonMobil Brasil, Petrogal Brasil (Galp|Sinopec), and Pré-sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA).
Bacalhau is Equinor’s largest international project and is a significant development for Brazil’s oil and gas sector, creating approximately 50,000 jobs over its lifetime.
The project utilizes advanced technology, including a Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, to minimize its environmental impact with an expected carbon intensity of around (9) kg per barrel.
