Landslides have caused ruptures in Ecuador’s main crude pipelines, the Trans-Ecuadorian Oil Pipeline System (SOTE) and the Heavy Crude Pipeline (OCP), multiple times in 2025. The repeated failures, driven by soil erosion near the Coca River, have forced state oil company Petroecuador to declare force majeure and suspend operations, significantly cutting national output.
